Halloween advice for Trick or Treaters

Trick or Treaters in Blackpool and the Fylde are being urged to stay safe as well as show respect for others in the community this Halloween.

The message comes from police and BSafe Blackpool in a bid to ensure everyone has a safe and happy Halloween.

Inspector Dave Barnes said: ”It is well known that not everyone wants to join in over the Halloween period. Some members of the community don’t celebrate the occasion on religious grounds while some people are fearful of the large groups of youths that come knocking on their door playing trick or treat.

“There is also a real worry amongst the community that it can be just another excuse for young people to cause anti-social behaviour and commit criminal damage.

“Halloween is renowned for the trick or treat tradition and whilst we don’t want to ruin anyone’s fun, we want young people to respect other people in the community.

“I also want to urge parents to make sure their children are safe when out trick or treating, be aware of the dark nights and poor weather conditions, and follow this advice.”

  • Never let children go out trick or treating on their own. Always make sure there is a responsible adult with them.
  • Only visit the homes of family and friends where you can be sure of being welcomed. Never visit strangers.
  • Never go into a house, even if you are invited, unless you know the homeowner and are sure of their intentions.
  • If people have notes on their doors asking not to be visited by trick or treaters, this should always be respected.
  • 'Tricks' have been played in the past where property has been damaged and people have felt intimidated. Those planning to trick or treat should be reminded that these sorts of actions are criminal offences and in fact, 'tricks' should never be played.
  • Have fun and enjoy Halloween but be responsible and consider others in the community.
  • Take a torch with you.
  • If you are wearing a dark Halloween costume take extra care when crossing the road.
  • When taking your children out Trick or Treating, abide by traffic restrictions
  • Don’t leave valuables on display when you park your car.

“Please take care this Halloween.”
