Abandoned vehicles

To report an abandoned vehicle online click here.

Abandoned vehicles have a negative effect on the quality of the local environment as they:

  • attract vandalism and rubbish
  • can be the result of crime
  • can be the means to commit a crime
  • can produce a risk of explosion and injury.

Abandoning a vehicle on any land in the open air or any other land forming part of a highway is a criminal offence under Section 2 of the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978. It is punishable by a maximum fine of £2,500 and/or three months in prison.

From April 2006, Fixed Penalty Notices for abandonment of vehicles will be available.
